This is Janurary 18, a day which many websites take the action to oppose SOPA — The purpose of this bill seems to stop “illegal goods” (for intellectual property rights) in the commerce on the network, but in fact, this is a black list about ‘the websites that seem likely to encroach on American’s commercial benefits’. The act is identical to that of the superpower in the opposite of Pacific1.

In my perception, Internet could be an artificial world of anarchy. In here everything can be free, and remind us of an invaluable practice of sharing. We can, surely, choose which thing deserves our pay. However, the incentive is all base on liberty. If there are legislated to censor the ‘illegal’ content in the network, it is impossible and unreasonable. Do not forget, if there is censorship, it can block everything by cooking up unwarranted charges.

Therefore, this day, everybody is on strike. A most famous one is Wikipedia, which is blacked out for this day:

Although the black-out is English version only, and doesn’t affect of the data request from third-party application, such as Wikibot and Article:

Anyway, certainly, it is shocking enough. It is well known that, in Wikimedia, there is always serious attention on copyright to ensure all contents in there are really able to be free to use. Even if it may be blocked, it can indeed expose the moral improperness of Internet censorship.

If you also want to join the event, you can go to SOPAStrike.com for more news. Then, to the best, keep an eye on it by following days besides today. Because public attention can be a massive power.

I know that my taste buds have a good luck.

When I feel the attractiveness of a food has receded, there will be always one appearing to attract and inspire me. By the way, I consider myself is not a deft-handed man. But my taste is such strict that I have an enormous gap between ‘acceptable’ and ‘good’ in my mind. Under a long time, I became so weary of that very few of things interest me. Certainly, the life of little delight is very hard, so I have to develop the habit that being more active than most people for looking for good things and inspiration. Fortunately, there is always a good result to fill me more energy to tide over the ordinary days.

In an evening, an idea came though, ‘go to have a different kind of dinner’. Then I went to ‘for Farm‘ （田樂） for their vegetarian-featured burger. The atmosphere of this shop, which is redeveloped from an old house, transpired a natural and delicious smell.

I ordered a ‘toasted chicken burger’ set. The mixture of chicken leg and shiitake mushrooms with miso sauce is an unique creation. Although it is not a role of the general meaning of ‘tasty’, but it can lead a fascinating exploration of savour. It has some analogy with listening to a talk of a philosopher.

The only drawback is the chicken meat which is little overly firm. It is a good feature to somebody wants to have a chewy taste, but not me. And at that time I must consider that I never really like to eat meat. Next time I may choose “Tofu burger’. Generally, it is more delicious than other burger I’ve tasted, by making by a special way. Besides, Their potato chowder soup is another delicious, which is merged plentiful ingredients such as potatoes, celery, mushroom, enokitake, parsley and bread cubes which are for relish. Can feel that they are made with genuineness and worth the relatively expensive price.

Record the landscape of this shop on my Moleskine watercolour pad is another purpose. Because at for Farm there are two floors, I sit at ground floor while I did not want to miss the season vegetables clock at upstair, so I use the intermixture style, which is inspired from cubism, when drew the scene. In brief, I began to try to do it not only for a simple description of this space, but creating my own imagination of it.

Also this time, I also attempted to draw a person (she is one of staffs at the shop). On the finished drawing (on the top of this post), the gradient technique seems still not in adequate skill, in some ways it can be blamed on these is no grey in Winsor & Newton solid watercolour set, then I must mix it from raw umber and ultramarine. However, if I continually mix the mingled grey with other colors, it is so prone to appear small gray points. In order to it, I started to take the Holbein cake watercolours in account. But, disappointedly, this stuff is hard to get to them who are not live in Japan.

One more thing invigorating — When I was drawing this, two girls who sit next to me stroke up a conversation with me, praise my drawing has good quality. And including the manager, the staffs all showed their interest to my drawing after they passed by and took a view of it. In fact, this piece of drawing is not ‘good quality’ enough in my standard. But surely, especially when most of the moderns just want to take a shot after find a scenery they like; painting, the kind of traditional art, had indeed become more profound and spiritual. Usually people resist being photographed, but do not hold a dislike of being portrayed (unless the painter is a caricaturist).

Thank to this experience, I actually recognise that painting — can be a job to plant the joy around. Of course, the concept of creation can be an effective way to promote the creating process, but if we make concept transcends the simple joy from the creative process; in my opinion, it is similar to putting the cart before the horse. I would like to give the world we exist a new idea and meaning; meanwhile, I hope the creation can probably kindle people’s mind and palate. Perhaps what I like to do just resemble the ‘for Farm’ burger with miso sauce as condiment that enliven the sensory with the vitality of nature.

牽阮的手 (Hand in Hand) Facebook 專頁

On why I decided to participate in the contest of BD-FIL 2011, it is just by a fortuitous chance. One of my friends, who enthusiasts for comics, recommended this contest to me. I am not sure how come he has known this contest, and it seems like a local event — I guess the range of participators is not further than Western Europe, refers the past recipients are mostly French and Swiss including only one German and one Spaniard. Such as me, the one who is beyond the other side of the planet, can really win it? I’m not so sure. Whatever, if I truly become a winner, it may be a record. Although I do not speak French well, I still try to do as the maximum possibility. On account of that, there would not be any missed opportunity to me. Exactly, the winners will upon to the subjective opinion, it would tentatively defined as “a half of chance is getting the award, another half is coming to naught”. If I succeed to get the award, the remuneration is not only rewards. So that I will be able to learn to become independent artist with the seniors’ experiences and resources. Therefore, I no longer have to suffer in career, then finally become a salesman or a Pâtissier. (I am not joking)

Let’s return to this piece of comic. It is a story describes an explorer who was looking for treasure of Ondine, but eventually comprehended the really valuable things are in his surrounding. Condensing the story into one page (even it is large as A3) is actually quite challenging. Especially I purchase the nib pens to draw this work. I draw some pictures for test in order to make practiced in these little tool to get started with presence. In conclusion, I create the work from the idea of story to finished work in just two days, following the conception of idea that costs about a month.

The end result seems adequate, that properly fits in with the theme “A world beneath our feet”. And it describes a basic principle: water conservation.

The former work for practice is also portrayed in flowing water. But the story is unreasonable, and the size is too large than the limit relating the rule of BD-FIL. In fact, this manuscript which appears meaningless is quite useful. Because when in painting process, new ideas and imaginative integration always occur me contemporarily. It is exactly “my process of conception”. And it shows the improvement has no miraculous path, but just doing it with endeavour, patience and persistence.

In short, the only creative point in this piece is the “water wizard” in a type of armor which looks like Mega Man, and with a magical surfboard. Perhaps this model is able to re-use next time, but will certainly not in this awkward framework. “Ondine” has at least some sense to make itself illustrate a better story.

Actually, I was very hesitant about being a comic artist. On the one hand, I also want to design illustrations or other things. On the other hand, can it really keep the pot boiling? However, in my current conviction, the real question is “what is the influential ripples in the creations”? The ability of influence should come from the multiple links to the world. What if people don’t only work for the living necessary, but the assistance to others for living in presence? I think if it is true, the world must be more joyful than the common anticipate. Therefore, I keep the pen and brush for the method of living in presence. When I have new works, each friend will become my reader and each reader will become my friend. And I would like to make a remedy to make peoples recover the familiarity with the internal spirit and external earth, then eventually become a joyfully eternal existence. All is start from the moment of one stroke — ultimately, these strokes intertwined to form the unrestrained sky of creativity.

Or briefly, why, and how to begin self education delightfully rather to taking account of competition for a good grade at school.

There is one situation exactly. For children and teenagers, the only way for being creative to change this world is learning to learn with free — the true philosophy about art of living. It is precisely because the education system resembles chains. The system gives you innumerable tests, instills restricted interpretation of knowledge, acts as factory to make the ‘talented labor’. After being squeezed in sociality of jobs, you do not know what happened, and have nothing to do but unexamined living. You get into a whirlpool called ‘routine life’, And you take a petty delight in making the end meet. You self-consider how come the small and ordinary one you become is justified.

The current ordinariness is defined by they who are ambition. Powerful groups of influencing persons are limiting the public lives, from our way to go to school.

The only solution exactly is all the people devote themselves to be a perceiver. So we should start building the sense of freedom, from childhood. Of course, you are youth or adult, if I have a right guess. But as long as you raise the aspiration of learning and living free, there is never too late to do.

We need to pursue the freedom and joy of learning much more earnestly. This article will guide you how to do it.

Three basic stands

First attitude you must have, is to abandon all prejudices. Opportunity can be able to come when you entirely open the arms to welcome it. Being a free-scholar, there are not bad situation, but lost chance. For an example, not to feel afraid of getting too maladroit on examination to apply for the top schools. Even never hold the mentality that: ‘I’ll never be in the other collages expect of this one’. On the academical way, diversification and elasticity are importantly encouraged. Then, you don’t have to be in a specific environment to learn and research the subjects well. In fact, it is exactly able to achieve an ideal study result no matter what school are you from. In any case, therefore, discard the unreasonable prejudices, and believe every circumstance you experienced is the certainly best arrangement.

Second, to target and map it out. To someone who has a positive purpose, the step should be easy. If you are perplexed about it, don’t panic. Try to experience the world ahead — such as writing the emotions, painting the scenery, strolling, traveling or reading, which are able to assist you in looking for future way. Of course, offering yourself a quiet space to clear the mind is very important. If there is a hard issue confused for a long time, meditation is a good way to solve it. Meditative contemplation seems to affect little to solve problems, but in fact, after gone through this process, you will find that the problems you held before are nothing — they could naturally be set down. This is a good start. Then, note the inspiration with something convenient to build up the preliminary planning of learning process, commonly, a blank notebook with a pen are great sufficiently.

Third, to do it. Everything has the criterion: Understanding after practice. You cannot achieve any goal if you just keep imagining with your airy ideas. Of course, not necessarily each thing which has been gone ahead is actual. Just commune with yourself, let inspiration show you way to do. DO NOT figure it out with the brain that deadly skillful in messing up objects and manufacturing problems instead of getting things done. The human minds create such terrible things as religions — what an obscurant trick, ranks, wars, wastes, and destruction of nature. Conversely, the presence is the main element of the universe that create the exquisite nature. Be in presence to achieve a beautiful method for your job or you will go astray.

Prepared these three attitudes, you should be ready to learn with own ability, and to open the essence we have originally: Enlightenment. Then these are going to describe the two way you may choose: Entire self-educating without school and teacher, or entering a school that are able to provide you to proceed a free and various learning.

Be the Master of yourself!

Self-educating without schools

If you would like to educate yourself for being an enlightener, that is necessary to search resources for learning. As above, ‘Mapping’ is quite important because you need a map to have a well-effective voyage. In present, the self-educated scholars (or a well-known hypocorism ‘bucanner-scholars&#8217 are free to learn everything through books and Internet.

For technical example such as programming, graphic designing and journaling, the learning resource about them all are available everywhere in Internet. You are able to download the open-sourced project and imitate the style of experts, then create your style of this sort of work.

For somebody studies academic territory such as literature, history and philosophy, you have to spend most time in library and bookstore to consult the books to discover knowledge. And Internet articles, especially periodical websites and varied blogs about the field you delved into, should be read and internalized to own ideas. Certainly, you have to work on sustained writing to note them. Besides, keep contact with other experts and bloggers, whether on faces or the web. In general, rare of them would ignore you, on account of the ‘bucanner-scholars’ as a very attractive identity continually. They will wonder how to have a voyage on ocean of science researching without playing a part at a ‘Shipping Organization’. If you are very fortunate to meet some savants are exactly on the field of free education, you can acquire a good help.

About getting a job, the project requests for freelancer are suitable. Some of them don’t request academic background but just skillful ability. Particularly in the field of information or the media, those who did not get a degree tend to have more untrammelled and creative thinking. In other words, degrees could be restrictions. The academic papers is firmly normal in format, then academia have its passe habits. For the people who have come over universities and institutes, are often inclined to work impotently in the fields which are such fast-mutated that often need to break the framework away. University is able to teach students how to be academic, but acts so weak at guiding them to cultivate environmental adaptation, or one more chiefly: be an enlightened being.

What I argue is not for holding all youth back from academical study, but encouraging them be sure of the purpose to study. Definitely keep these lazy reasons off such as ‘nowadays everyone has one more degree’ or ‘I don’t know what else I have to do excluding studying in college’. You have a considerably board sky than they who limited themselves to studying. You can participate in the actual work to aid the people in face. You can further kindle and carry forward your creative ideas to catalyze the world. The current society has imposed more and more excessive dogmas and limitations in learning. What we must do is only change and regain the freedom to learn.

Learning with liberty and joy in a school

Academical system may be a resistance, but it is also important to transform this into a booster. There is still convenience in collage, like equipments and communication with other. And without doubt to say that professors are in the field with considerable experience though they still tend to make some awfully stubborn trouble. Naturally, we go to school for learning knowledge, skills and ideas, rather than wasting time on trivialities. Established work is able to be completed quickly by ‘process list’. Especially I recommend students to use GTD techniques, to choose the desired course, community or extracurricular activities easily on the basis of their own drew-up learning goals.

Don’t set ‘degree’ for the purpose. Because the destination does not exist, but just the present. Being a student is to learn knowledge from the outside, but also the process of introspection. You should understand what you can do after the college years, what the innovative ideas can be stimulated? To understand that no destination on learning is the first ‘enlightenment’.

For studying free, choose a suitable collage is essential. If you really believe that the current environment is not suitable, try to begin to change (both outside or inside). You will spark ideas for problem-solving to be more creative.

If the school has various requirements, I think it as a pure experience is reasonable. Both attaching valuable pleasure or expressing angry antipathy make you stray and drift apart. Let the past go. Look at the future come. Enjoy the current moment you have — the total thing available to you now.

The conclusion of this is very simple. Feel free to use the supplied resources in school for learning, create your own next road. (Not the existing one!)

Education of Meditation

‘Letting the past go’ is the key. Most people said that: ‘This burden is really heavy but I can’t set it down. I must carry it.’ But I want you to let it go, because the burden is only an illusion. And those who don’t put it down are making the people around them volume into the illusion of ‘we just cannot let it go’. This is a very confused idea which have you feel that your life was disarranged into messy by somebody. In fact, no one has disturbed you, and it is all owing to that you don’t let it go.

This does not mean I advocate the status quo. No, I am the most positive advocate of change. Otherwise I would not write this article. What if I leave those painful alone to sink under their pain? Maybe all I should do is hug them (now even more simple to response the plaints on their micro-blog in a ‘* hug *&#8217 sometime, next, they will probably feel contented. Why should I infer why modern people are totally discouraged for their future, why nobody feels any joy? Because the system of education teaches them ‘Never be happy because you have to worry about everything around world to be successful. ‘ But the reality is, if you never happy, it is entirely up. You will want to commit suicide. You will feel there is apparently not any meaning in life. This is a warning, but also the key. If a top student who was supposed to make the future success will also want to terminate himself by his own, we must through this thought: ‘What is the real pleasure? ‘ and then extend it to ‘Who I am? Why do I live?’. This is the most basic question, the key.

This is what the education must give us. Without regard to class, nor about skills. Only matter the existence — ‘Who I am’? The exact answer is IN SELF. Only those who are nurtured free enough to have a clear understanding of themselves will enlighten. This is not the comfortable privilege of riches. This is not an alternative choice, either. This is the freedom we deserve as people.

Observably, we are here and now to understand the mysteries of our own existence. Only trough meditation, we can become a progressive and vigorous adult. No longer is a mind-controlled ‘living dead’. Only after enlightenment, we bloom flourishingly.

In short, the real education without monetary waste, conscious oppression or distant expectance. You do not even specifically go to Pune for experience the wisdom of mystics though this is truly edifying. You just need to start learning with your own ability and patience. You will discover your potential energy and sagacity with wonder. In fact, everyone had always been intelligent, but most people passed away ignorantly, without enjoyment in an enlightened life. Because they just had not learned how to be enlightened. Instead, they immersed yourself in thoughts from others. Fortunately, with epoch evolution, we are now able to carefully listen to own voice. It is the time to change from the attitude towards learning.

Just now realize the crucial moment and plant the seed of meditation. It is never too late to harvest the fruits of enlightenment.

In a genial afternoon, which is rare in this winter of the city how usually moist. At a tranquil and green-ample street, which is also rare in the downtown how constantly tumultuous. I appointed with a friend to have a lunch together this time, at Meowvelous Cafè, the narrow bistro that contrarily seems conspicuous in this silent neighborhood.

On the independent bistro that resemble a stage, the chef equates with musician. Enjoying melodious delicacies with easy chat, we found the joyful ebullience of dining.

If available, let’s taste the fervent favor next and more time.

After twenty days, I have finished the first part, which is 21 pages in total, of my Cahier. The picture above the post showed that the progress achieved second part. I’m used to draft a few pages, then finalize the batch of pages. Most of these pages are colored in the recent three days. By calculating, it seems like to finish one page per day — sufficient for progress. Since I am familiar with drawing on the Cahier after attempt in preceding drawing, I would do more difficult handicraft in next pages. Then the whole sketchbook would be more interesting.

I came up with some vagary in the plot of part one. The protagonist felt in a fantasy image, next with becoming “The Calligraphic Knight”, arrived a greek polis. A sage lead him to “deal with a problem” for the square of greatness. The plot is showed in these pages (Here are picture set of part one).

The “Advertisement” of new MacBook Air (?) below of page 19 is just drafted for fun. Actually, the first brand of Apple Inc. exactly featured Isaac Newton under the fabled apple tree. So there is still some association between my creation.

I am skill more in charcoal and pastel, but I do not draw with them frequently because the Moleskine Cahier is too slithery for pastel coloration. Therefore, I began to draw on sketch paper then clip and paste on the sketchbook just as I said before.

There are my all implements in dry drawing:

And I paint watercolor with Winsor & Newton Cotman travel set. It is such handy that doesn’t require any other tools, except for a lump of sponge.

By the way, I received the tour t-shirt on 25 Oct. after Art House Co-op notified me shipped the tour t-shirt on 22 Oct. with email. So much faster than I expected. Perhaps the local post office handled many parcels from Art House Co-op recently, so they are already adept at this.

It looks such pretty good that I can take a little rest for the moment. I have to step up the progress soon for creating with more higher craft.

aDiary by Aleiku

—— Stephan Bodian

I have found that the theme which I chose “The Greatest Story Ever Told” may be the most difficult theme. Because the theme could let you elaborate as you free, and you should have so many – many – more many ideas to decide the frame of your story. Of course I said it can be set about describing “telling story”, instead creating a story. However, I merge them together — the story about “the birth of a story”. I think my way is very hard to drive, but I’ll go ahead. Expect for fee when participated, it is an interesting idea that I can’t give it up.

I drew these five pages with blacklead pencils (Faber-Castell 9000), color pencils (Faber-Castell Red Classic), fine lines (Uni Mitsubishi) and soft pastel (Faber-Castell Creative Studio).

And I have found a problem: the leaves of sketchbook are such slithery that I can’t handle traditional technique of sketch well on them. So the five pages actually have buggy effect, except for fine lines. (The sketchbook of Sketchbook Project is not fit for sketching totally! I’m astonished.) I consider that next time I must draw on watercolor paper, then clip and paste on the sketchbook. (Just as Anais Lee doing.)
By the way, Catrain’s work that painted with watercolor displays better effect. So I also consider to use watercolor on some next pages.

The story is ready to begin, just after the title “Imagine the Utopia”. Must express better effect the time.

Just as the picture seems, I also take a part of the year concert of sketchbook by Art House Co-op.

I had known this event through two blogs that separately belong to an art theory teacher, catrain, who loves sketch journaling, and a graphic artist, Anais Lee.

When I entered the Sketchbook Project website, I decide to participate in it on the moment. Because I think that my ability in draw is becoming enough to create something I would like to express; moreover, the event is too interesting for me to ignore it. So I payed USD$65 for a participatory sketchbook (Moleskine Cahier, I selected Navy Blue), Brooklyn Art Library card and Tour T-shirt; furthermore, additional charge USD$10 for shipping.

I send the order on Sep. 24, received notice on 27, and got the materials on Oct. 5. It took about 10-11 days from order to ready materials if you’re not in United State. Originally, I worried much about that the materials may lose on shipping way, fairly it finally arrived home mailbox to cut my fret.

The mailbag is smaller than my image. I put a 16-cm ruler below the bag and it measures about 20 centimeter.

The bag contains just Moleskine Cahier which clips the illustration of Sketchbook Project and Brooklyn Art Library card. The barcode on the card is the ID for certification to visit the Library and sketchbooks, then the back cover of the sketchbook is for filing and checking the works which finished and returned to Art House Co-op.

There is a little folder on reverse side of the back cover. The Moleskine product description is clipped in it. (Business services……? But it may be useless for me that already have two Moleskine notebooks.)
It also fits the illustration paper and card. Such a fine design.

Tour T-shirt hasn’t been send yet. Perhaps it will be sent in November or December.

After received sketchbook, the theme is the first work that have to do. My theme is “The Greatest Story Ever Told”, such a popular theme that it is booked out fast. (I reviewed the participational sheet on Oct. 6, found the themes “The Great Story Ever Told” and “Boy and Girls” were disappeared from the sheet, I considered that they were booked out recently.) I chose the theme, because I always hold ideas about creation, including story. Although I had thought journaling form about “telling story”, I decided to make the form be similar to a picture book. In other words, it will be a total story. Very challenging creation.

I placed the theme with: “The Calligraphic Knight”, which is a story describing the adventure of a knight with a pen for his “weapon”. More accurate saying, the “weapon” is not for battle but solving the problem on adventure with the knight’s strong imagination. I inspired from “Telling Story”, so I decided to describe the skilled behavior of expression for human — calligraphy (including writing and drawing).

I would like to make the art style vivid, childlike, and make the story more philosophic.
Deliberately I drew the title page like the draft of comic creating, as representing “the birth of a story”. The inside story and style has been roughly framed, however I think it should be orientated towards completion slowly in drawing process. Briefly, the process would be “learning by doing”.

If you also like to participate in, enter the site and sign up. The sign up date by October 31, 2010, the present participaters must postmark done sketchbook by January 15, 2011. And the exhibition tour starts from February 19, from Brooklyn Art Library.

After successfully finish the participation, I would like to go to Brooklyn — to see the works from all around the world. I’m looking forward to it very much.

My creating course will be available on flickr, and deviantART, my main gallery for artworks. And I will also express the course with descriptive posts here.
